Week 11
Thursday 14 November → Wednesday 20
We have studied a set of contemporary ethical theories developed to respond to cultural relativism. This work corresponded with Chapter 4 in the textbook. We will now begin addressing some general issues in business and economic ethics.
This week, we will cover issues surrounding advertising and consumers (Chapter 12 in the textbook), and big data/artificial intelligence (Chapter 13 in the textbook).
Our video course work this week can be found below. We will begin lightening up on the length of the video sessions as we move to the end of the semester.
Our discussion board work this week can be found below.
Review, Reading, Lecture & Discussion
Review
Professor's video
Please watch the video below where I respond to last week’s db. This week is a bit different: I will go through and show how all the theories from Chapter 4 could be applied to the case. Not all the ways they could be applied, but at least one way for each theory. I'm doing it this way this one time because I really want to hammer those Chapter 4 theories and make sure we get them down - your grade on the final exam depends on how well you get these! So, please go back to the db and look at what you and your classmates have written, and keep those references in mind as I go through showing how I would approach the case.
Reading Our reading homework will be Chapter 12 of Business Ethics Workshop, the chapter titled The Selling Office: Advertising and Consumer Protection. And: Chapter 13, The Data Office: Privacy and Identity in Big Data Reality.
Note: The Chapter 12 reading is optional! Please either do the reading OR watch the video below: Chapter 12, Module 1. You don't need to do both.
Online Lecture
Chapter 12, Module 1
Please watch the online lecture below or read Chapter 12 in the textbook. You don't need to do both.

Discussion
Case Study: Flip the Script!
Please watch the video study below (it is the same one as just above, so no need to watch again if you just watched the above!).
On the online discussion board, please write your own dilemma/question about artificial intelligence as related to the video and the business world.
Then, briefly indicate how you might approach the problem with one of the Chapter 4 theories.
Finally, respond to at least one (only one this week) of your classmates about their question and answer.
